Industrial Engineering

"If we tried to explain in a few words what is Industrial Engineering, we could say that it is the design, management and improvement of production and service systems. The basic principle on wich the career is based on is "There is always a better way of doing things" and the goal of the Industrial Engineer is to find better ways of doing things in production and service systems".

Industrial Engineering, according to Womack and Jones (1996), is the design, installation, and improvement of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy by drawing upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.  The role of an Industrial Engineer is to facilitate the generation of quality products and the optimization of the use of inputs and resources, with a systems approach to organizations.

Work areas

The techniques an Industrial Engineer applies have been developed for applications in manufacturing and services, but are highly general and applicable to any system.  The Industrial Engineer can perform a variety of positions such as the following:

  • Motion study and measurement of work: to assess the different activities of an operation or process to improve it and determine costs, wage policies, production schedules, etc.
  • Facility layout planning: design of industrial facilities, location of equipment and machinery, material flows, location of warehouses, etc..
  • Management or operations management: manage different operations to determine quantity, quality, best methods and times required for the production of goods and services.
  • Quality management: management of activities related to quality in order to meet requirements of raw materials and finished problems and to achieve costumers satisfaction.
  • Formulation and management of industrial projects: all activities aimed at recognizing potential markets, economic sustainability and justification of manufacturing facilities, design processes, estimate their abilities and make them work, ranging from planes to the start of operations in an integrated way.
  • Electronic data processing: the amount of information flow within an organization claim to be structured data systems, so increasingly Industrial Engineers are working with them, because of their training in the study of systems in general.
  • Managing the supply chain and logistics: Due to the complexity of operations required to bring finished products to consumers, Industrial Engineers have been working on the optimization of distribution systems for goods and services.
  • Operations Research: development of mathematical models for the optimal solution of problems involving resource allocation, cost minimization or profit maximization.
  • Project development and financial analysis: similar to the area of industrial project, the Industrial Engineer can perform formulating and evaluating investment projects, with input and financial products.
  • Consulting: it is increasingly common to find Industrial Engineers engaged in consulting in the areas mentioned above.  That is, act as agents external to the organizations who propose solutions to the status quo.

 This career is responsible for preparing professionals in the field of business studies, with special emphasis on developing the specialized technical knowledge bases that allow students to adapt to constant changes and pressures that companies must face to strategically address competition both nationally and internationally.

 Business administrators can plan, integrate, coordinate and control the resources available to production systems towards achieving the objectives set by the company, developed for this purpose as leadership management skills. The career provides students with technical and humanistic training, and enables them to make the best decisions when necessary.

Business administration students will acquire the knowledge that will allow them to successfully face the challenges the business world poses, and considering the implementation of policies that lead to overcoming the main problems and obstacles facing the dynamics of social development.

In our country, business administrators are working in different areas or fields of business activity such as:

  • In middle management positions or in the areas of human resources, marketing, operations, finance, accounting, administrative and / or strategic.
  • Teaching, training and research in all areas of general administrative tasks.
  • Consultant for companies, both public and private and / or developing feasibility studies and project management.
  • Entrepeneurs managing their own companies.
